Fire or Apron?

31 Aug

I am working on my Master’s Degree in Family Studies from Texas Womans University and this semester I happen to be taking a class called Gender Roles.  What is more central and traditional to the female gender role than cooking, right?  So I am merging these two topics for at least the next few months: my love for cooking and trying new foods as well as the roles we occupy depending on what sex we were born.

    Hey Joanna,

Hows it going? I see we are in another class together. I feel like we have been on this journey together since starting the Master’s program. I was wondering if you are still in teh same field of work and if so how do you think the gender role development class will help you in your career? I will have to say that this class and the video we watched has already started helping me recognize things within the residents I work with. Since I have become a supervisor I have also picked up on things between my male and female staff. It is all very interesting to me because my males like to take charge when a male resident is acting out kind of like in our Development book when it talks about males and aggressive behavior. Whereas my females are pretty laid back and just do what they are told and making sure the residents have what they need kind of like a mother would with a child.
Looking forward to having you in another class.

Yes we are! What is your plan for next semester? I was hoping to take this class and Communication in Marriage and Family this semester but the second one was not online.

Yes. Still a JPO. I picked this class because of my female caseload as well as my long term goal of opening a female offender rtc. Are you a supervisor in the detention facility? It is interesting what you said about the difference in staff. Of course I only observe our staff when I go to see one of my kids but I have actually observed similar behavior of staff. I find staff acts both ways, some females and males are often believed to be “picking” on residents and then like you said you have others that treat them as a mother or father. Anyway, interesting comparison. I will look for the same observations! Talk with you soon!

    Hey Joanna,

I am trying to graduate in December, but it is taking a lot of work for me to get it all done. I understand trying to find all classes online. I have been taking so many classes at one time and it’s hard, but I have to get done because it is becoming a lot.
That’s good that you picked it based on your field of work. I am in a parenting education as well and it is very helpful especially with working with the parents. Yes I am a supervisor and it is definitely a tough job. We had a new building built this summer which we moved our male residents over today and hopefully moving the females over next week. If you ever come through Denton you should take a look at the facility. I pay a lot of attention because you can only imagine what you will see when just observing. You take care and talk to you soon!
